3 Ways to Retrieve Jewelry From a Drain

We all know the feeling of panic that comes with watching your ring or necklace fall down the drain. If you don't stop it in time, don't worry about losing it forever to your plumbing quite yet. There are several ways to retrieve your jewelry that just went down the drain if you move quickly and thoughtfully. Here are three tips that may help you retrieve your jewelry from the bathroom or kitchen sink, your shower drain, and even your garbage disposal.

How Can I Retrieve Jewelry From My Drain?

1. Sink

If you drop any jewelry down the bathroom or kitchen sink, first, turn off the water and take apart the P trap, which is the U-shaped pipe under the sink. A plumber can also access this piece. If you can still see your ring or necklace that has fallen down your drain and don't think it has gone to the P trap yet, try using a strong magnet.

2. Shower Drain

Your shower drain will not have a P trap, so you'll have to go about retrieving your jewelry differently. Take the shower drain cover off, being careful not to lose the screws that keep it in place down the drain, too. Try using a vacuum or a strong magnet to bring your jewelry back up. If that doesn't work, go ahead and stick your hand down the drain. Again, if you aren't comfortable with this, call your local plumber to help.

3. Garbage Disposal

If your jewelry has fallen down your garbage disposal, you will first want to turn your power off for your own safety. Try using tongs to fish for your fallen piece, and if that doesn't work, you'll need to call your plumber. This isn't something you should try to fix on your own, as your garbage disposal can be very dangerous to stick your hand down. If you believe your jewelry has been ground up already, you might have sustained damage to your garbage disposal and will need repair.
